Not knowing where to start is more common than you think. When we are expected to talk, this can lead us to withdraw, because we don't know what to say. Just having a general chat about life, can help you to relax and be more comfortable talking about what is going on for you. Counselling session isn't always talking about the negative experiences in life. They can be about identifying and recognising the good things too.
Counselling is having the space to process what is going on for you. It's about building your tool kit to help you manage difficult situations as they arise. It's about developing your self-awareness to find out what matters to you. Oftentimes, things that happened in our past, can still affect our present day. By exploring your past, you can find answers to what is going on.

Before we start working together, you will have a free 20 minute call where we can talk about what has guided you to reach out for counselling. I will also ask you some questions about what is currently going on for you. This helps us to make sure that I am the right person for you. It will also highlight if you need to access more immediate mental health support services. You are under no obligation to start with me, but if you do decide you want to go ahead, then I will email across some forms that need to be completed prior to your first session.
The first session will be the opportunity to discuss in more detail what we spoke about in the assessment call. I will also go over the counselling agreement and answer any questions you may have. Towards the end of the session, I will let you know that we are nearing the end and check in with you to make sure you are ok. I will ask if you would like to book in for another session.
If you need to cancel a session, I do ask that you let me know at least 24 hours before the agreed day/time. This allows me to make sure that I can offer a suitable alternative. You can email, call or text me, to let me know that you wish to cancel and rearrange.
